If you're not familiar with the Creatures series, then allow us to fill you in: the first instalment was released on PC in 1996, back when the cyber pet bandwagon was in full swing. The connection being that in the game it's your job to nurture, protect and educate the Gremlin-like stars of the game. Over the years a few sequels have been spawned - including one on PSone - which makes this the second console outing. Although according to the title screen, and contrary to the box, this is actually Creatures 3.

There's no intro or tutorial to speak of, which gives the impression that the developers assume you've played the previous games. Thankfully then, the controls are easy to master. You interact with your creatures - or Norns, to use their proper name - via a fairy called Scrubby, who is essentially a glorified cursor. Scrubby can carry certain objects, command your creatures to do things and also praise or issue a smack to your beings. Punishing them isn't something you have to do often, in spite of the fact that one of our Norns did get into the unruly habit of kicking everything in sight.

Although you have to keep an eye on hunger, tiredness and boredom gauges, the focus is on helping them rebuild a space ship by collecting stars. Only adult Norns can carry the stars, and once they've been shown how to do so and where to take them they become self-sufficient. There is a twist however - the stars vanish after a while, so you have to make sure a constant flow is always en route to the star container. With just the two adult Norms available initially this is impossible, which is where breeding comes into play.

Scattered around the Norn's world are hearts, and if ten are collected your Norn becomes horny, for want of a better word. When two horny adult Norns of different sexes get together a baby is produced, which you can name. DNA gets passed from Norn to Norn, so it's not uncommon to have a family with the same distinguishing features. Just try not to get too attached to them, as they do eventually die.

What's good about the game is that you don't have to tend to the Norn's needs every five seconds. If they get hungry they'll go and forage for food, or if they get tired they'll have a snooze - although if they sleep outdoors too often they'll become ill. And once you've educated them, watching them go about their chores is oddly mesmerizing. This is about as mellow as gaming gets, folks.

A carefree - and cheaper - alternative to The Sims.
